Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in April 2020: Timber and Logs Cargo Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in April 2020 grew by 20.6% year-on-year. Import increased by 28.8%, cabotage surged by 85.2% and export by 70.4%. Transit, on the contrary, was down 6.7%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in April 2020 made 1.1%.

    47.2% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 33.7% and foodstuffs for 7.1%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the ferrous metals (up 2.1-fold), grain (+93%) and timber and logs segments (+79.8%).

    The commodities that decreased were piece cargo (-53.8%), other bulk (grab) (-48.1%) and containerized cargo (-35.3%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 58% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in April. Astrakhan handled 33.3%, and Olya 8.7% of the total.
