Far East Basin Ports’ Throughput: Reefer Cargo Up

  • According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin ports in February 2020 remained much on the previous year’s level (-0.3%). Import was down 21.8%, cabotage down 8.1, and transit decreased by 1.4%. Export, on the contrary, grew by 1.5%.

    The share of the Far East basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in February 2020 amounted to 24.6%.

    More than 75% in the Russian Far Eastern ports’ commodity structure is coal, oil and products. In February, coal and coke accounted for 42.1% of the total volume, crude oil for 26.7% and oil products for 7.9%. Containerized cargo constituted 7.7% of the total.

    It should be noted that the highest growth rate was in the other bulk (grab) segment (+64.7%), reefer cargo (+44.7%) and other bulk (suction) cargo (+40.2%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were ferry cargo (-42.2%), piece cargo (-24.3%) and timber and logs (-21.2%).

    Vostochny accounted for 39.4% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Far East basin sea ports in February. Nakhodka handled 14%, and Vanino 11.9% of the total.
