Russia’s Food Products Import

  • According to the RF Federal Customs Service’s statistics, in January-May 2019, meat and dairy import into Russia increased.  During this period, 168.3 thousand tons of fresh and frozen meat was imported, twice as much as during the first 5 months of 2018.

    Fish import was down 2.3% year-on-year to 170.5 thousand tons. Fresh and frozen poultry import increased 10.4% up to 91.5 thousand tons.

    Canned meat and meat specialties import declined by 16.9% down to 5.9 thousand tons.

    Milk and condensed cream import was up 23.5% to 77.7 thousand tons. Cheese and cottage cheese import increased by 6.2% up to 107.4 thousand tons. Butter import surged by 81.3% amounting to 48.4 thousand tons.

    Vegetable oil import dropped by 90.5% down to 1.3 thousand tons. Palm oil import also declined slightly, by 0.5% down to 409.9 thousand tons.

    Citrus fruit import was up 6.1% to 805.9 thousand tons, other major fruit categories declined. Thus, bananas import was own 1.7% to 717.4 thousand tons, and apples import down 11% to 523.1 thousand tons.

    Raw sugar import increased by 33.3% up to 2.8 thousand tons, white sugar import grew even more significantly by 50.9% up to 173.7 thousand tons.

    In May, the following categories demonstrated a year-on-year decline in import volumes: palm oil (-27.4% down to 48.3 thousand tons), apples (-17.6% down to 89.3 thousand tons), bananas (-11.3% down to 137.1 thousand tons), citrus fruit (-32.5% down to 54.7 thousand tons), fresh and frozen meant (-3.2% down to 32.8 thousand tons), milk and condensed cream (-6.9% down to 10.8 thousand tons), and vegetable oil (-95% down to 0.1 thousand tons).

    Month-on-month, almost all the product categories under report were down, with only white sugar and poultry demonstrating growth, up 3.4-fold to 68.7 thousand tons and up 2.1-fold to 21.1 thousand tons respectively.

    Coffee import in January-May grew by 14.6% up to 92.5 thousand tons, while tea import declined by 10.9% down to 63.9 thousand tons.

    In May, coffee import increased by 18% year-on-year and by 0.5% month-on-month up to 19 thousand tons. Tea import was down 19.3% year-on-year and 25.3% month-on-month to 12.1 thousand tons.
