Car Sales Growth “Not a Realistic Scenario Anymore”

  • According to the Association of European Businesses (AEB) statistics, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in January-June 2019 declined by 2.4% year-on-year making 828.8 thousand units. In June, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles dropped by 3.3% year-on-year down to 151.2 thousand.

“Six months into 2019, we find the market 2.4% down year-on-year, with a second quarter that proved more challenging than the first. Market expectations for the second half of the year are not fundamentally better. It is clear that market growth in the full year of 2019 is not a realistic scenario anymore. Even with a certain trend improvement in the second half, it would appear that the best outcome the market can hope for is to equalize last year’s sales result”, commented Joerg Schreiber, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee.

Lada remained the leader of the Russian car market in June with its sales decreasing 2% year-on-year down to 30.8 thousand units.

KIA continues to rate the second with its sales amounting to 19.3 thousand cars, down 2.6% year-on-year.

Hyundai remains the third, its sales declined by 0.6% down to 16.3 thousand cars.

Renault saw its sales drop by 11.9% year-on-year down to 11.9 thousand units.

Volkswagen rates the fifth, its sales increased by 5.7% up to 9.4 thousand units.

Among the car brands that demonstrated the most spectacular growth in June were Geely (up 3.9-fold) and Haval (up 4.4-fold).

The brands that saw their sales decline the most were Mercedes-Benz (-75%), Lifan (-75%), smart (-68%), Honda (-66%), Foton commercial vehicles (-58%), and Zotye (-57%).
