During January-April 2019, the sea ports of Ukraine handled 305.6 thousand TEU, up 18.6% year-on-year.
By way of comparison, Russia’s largest Black Sea port of Novorossiysk during the same period handled some 280 thousand TEU, down 7.3 year-on-year, partly due to a decline in coastal trade.
According to the Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration, export container traffic via the Ukrainian sea ports made 146.9 thousand TEU, up 18.2% year-on-year. Import was up 16.9% to 146.1 thousand TEU. Transit surged by 48.5% up to 12.3 thousand TEU.
Odessa handled 197.5 thousand TEU during January-April 2019, up 3.9% year-on-year.
Container traffic via Yuzhny surged 2.5-fold up to 65.9 thousand tons, much due to the shift of Maersk line from Odessa to Yuzhny in April last year.
Chernomorsk (formerly known as Ilyichevsk) handled 41.8 thousand TEU, up 2.7% year-on-year.
Olvia Specialized Sea Port (formerly, Oktyabrsk) handled just 36 TEU, down 86.5% year-on-year.
