During Q4 2018, the sea ports of Ukraine saw their container traffic significantly increase. The full year 2018 throughput made 846.5 thousand TEU, up 43.4%.
However, if we take into account the 2017 results of Ilyichevsk Sea Fishing Port, which were not included into the statistics of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration for that period, the year-on-year growth would be ‘just’ 17%.
By way of comparison, Russia’s largest Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in 2018 handled some 755 thousand TEU, up 2.5% year-on-year.
Export container traffic via the Ukrainian sea ports made 400.8 thousand TEU, up 59.5% year-on-year. Import grew 36.2% up to 412.9 thousand TEU.
Transit declined 2% down to 32.7 thousand TEU. Cabotage dropped 96.5% down to 80 TEU.
Odessa handled 598.6 thousand TEU during 2018, up 15.2% year-on-year.
Container traffic via Yuzhny surged 76.7% up to 124.9 thousand TEU.
Chernomorsk (formerly known as Ilyichevsk) handled 122.6 thousand TEU compared to just 42 TEU in 2017. The upsurge is due to the fact that the Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration in 2018 included the container throughput of Ilyichevsk Sea Fishing Port in the statistics of Chernomorsk. According to SeaNews’ data, Ilyichevsk Sea Fishing Port handled 122.6 thousand TEU in 2018, 8.1% below the figure for the 2017 result.
Olvia Specialized Sea Port (formerly, Oktyabrsk) handled 333 TEU increasing its previous year’s result 6.7-fold.
