April 23 the construction of Bagaevsky lock system on the Don River started. The official ceremony was attended by RF Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov, Vice Minister Victor Olersky, Rostov Oblast Governor Vassily Golubev and Stroytransgaz MD Mikhail Khryapov.
The completion of the project will help expand the capacity of the Volga-Don shipping channel, improve navigation safety, develop export-oriented transport infrastructure, as well as guarantee water supply for the local community, the Minister said.
According to M.Khryapov, head of the company that won the contract for stage 1 of the project, the first stage envisages building a temporary berth, preparing for moving the fairway for the period of construction, creating artificial territories and setting up a power line.
