Russian Transport Sector in January-August 2022

  • During January-August 2022, cargo volume carried by all transport modes in the RF transport system was down 0.8% year-on-year to 5.1 bn tons.

    According to the RF Statistics Agency, the largest volume was carried by road, up 0.5% year-on-year to 3.47 bn tons.

    Rail freight declined by 3.4% year-on-year down to 821.6 mn tons.

    Pipeline traffic was down 4.7% year-on-year to 716.7 mn tons. Gas pipeline transportation declined by 14.2% down to 327.5 mn tons. The volume of crude oil pipeline transportation increased by 4.9% to 359.7 mn tons and that of product pipeline transportation by 5.1% to 29.5 mn tons.

    Sea freight grew by 16.7% year-on-year up to 17.3 mn tons.

    Inland shipping volume increased by 2.2% year-on-year up to 70.6 mn tons.

    Air transport carried 0.43 mn tons, down 54% year-on-year.

    In August 2022, all the transport mode carried 1.5% more cargo than during the same period of 2021. Air freight grew the most, up 29.7% year-on-year.
