Saimaa Canal Freight Traffic Up 6% in January-October 2021

  • According to the Statistics Finland, freight traffic by the Saimaa Canal amounted to 1.13 mn tons during January-October 2021, up 6% year-on-year.

    985 cargo vessels transited the Canal during the period under report, up 4.2% year-on-year. 577 of them, or 58.6% of the total were flying the Russian flag, up 0.3% year-on-year.

    The main commodity transported was timber and logs, which grew by 7.2% up to 504.1 thousand tons. Sawn goods were up 2.1-fold to 63.4 thousand tons.

    Fertilizers increased by 33.8% up to 167.9 thousand tons, and coal by 63.1% up to 25.7 thousand tons.

    Construction cargo declined by 13.1%, paper by 25.8%, and pulp by 22.7%.
