Russian Railways’ Container Traffic Growth Continues Slower

  • Russian Railways have reported a 16.5% year-on-year increase in rail container traffic during January-November 2020. All in all, 5.28 mn TEU was carried during the period under report.

    Domestic container traffic grew by 12.3% up to 2.12 mn TEU, export was up 14.3% to some 1.32 mn TEU, import up 15.9% to 1.11 mn TEU, and transit up 37.5% to 718.9 thousand TEU.

    Laden container traffic made 3.6 mn TEU, up 18% year-on-year.

    Commodity-wise, containerized fruit, vegetables and potatoes grew the most, up 64.3% to 6.9 thousand TEU. Other foodstuffs were up 34.5% to 151.4 thousand TEU, ferrous metals up 46.5% to 185.4 thousand TEU, non-ferrous ore and raw sulphur up 37.4% to 26.1 thousand TEU.

    Consumer goods increased by 28.6% up to 360.4 thousand TEU, chemicals and soda transportation grew by 25.8% year-on-year up to 635.2 thousand TEU

    Containerized timber and woodwork were up 6.4% to 497.3 thousand TEU, paper by 15.3% up to 325.6 thousand TEU.

    Containerized machinery, equipment and engines were up 29.5% to 268.4 thousand TEU, hardware by 16.4% up to 304.3 thousand TEU, non-ferrous metals by 27.6% to 133.2 thousand TEU, construction cargo up 12.2% to 116.7 thousand TEU.

    Containerized chemical and mineral fertilizers grew by 9.2% year-on-year up to 38.5 thousand TEU, other and LCL cargo by 20.2% up to 119.7 thousand TEU.

    Containerized grain was up 38.8% to 9.4 thousand TEU, salt up 4.8% to 1.3 thousand TEU, sugar up 41.3% to 3.9 thousand TEU, meal and flour up 9.7% to 9.6 thousand TEU.

    Vehicles and parts were down 1.7% to 221.9 thousand TEU, oil and products down 6.4% to 74.1 thousand TEU, metal structures down 7% to 15.2 thousand TEU, and fish down 3.1% to 20 thousand TEU.
