Year-End Race in Russian Car Market Continues

  • According to the Association of European Businesses (AEB) statistics, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia during January-November 2020 declined by 10.3% year-on-year making 1.35 mn units.

In November, the sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles grew by 5.9% year-on-year and by 2% month-on-month to make 154.2 thousand units.

“As expected, the strong start of the Year-end race has continued with another month of growth. In November, the new vehicle sales increased by 5,9%, a little less than in October. Since the summer, the weakened Ruble has been pushing the customer demand and, consequently, the sales. The New Year shopping time has started already and expected price adaptations by manufacturers additionally motivate faster purchase decisions. With -10,3% YoY and a strong sales month ahead, the AEB AMC year-end sales forecast of 1 522 k passenger vehicles and LVCs looks even more realistic. The AMC will announce the final 2020 total sales figures at its annual press conference on January 14, 2021. We wish all our customers, media representatives and partners a happy New Year!”” Thomas Staertzel, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, commented.

Lada remained the leader of the Russian car market in November with its sales up 21.9% year-on-year to 38.1 thousand units.

KIA continues to rate the second with its sales amounting to 21 thousand cars, up 7.1% year-on-year.

Hyundai remains the third with its sales grow by 7.1% year-on-year to 21 thousand cars.

Renault ranked the fourth, its sales increased by 7.9% up to 13.9 thousand units.

Volkswagen and Škoda again changed places in the ranking with Volkswagen moving up to the fifth position, its sales up 11.4% to 10.2 thousand units, and Škoda out of the Top 5.

Among the car brands that demonstrated the most spectacular growth in November were Isuzu (up 2.7-fold), Chery (up 2.5-fold), Geely (up 2.3-fold) и коммерческих автомобилей Foton (up 2.3-fold).

The brands that saw their sales decline the most were Chevrolet (-98%), Genesis (-72%) and Honda (-50%).
