More Ginger, Less Pepper: Russia’ Spices Imports in Q1 2020

    According to SeaNews Russian Foreign Trade Customs Statistics online service, in Q1 2020 Russia imported 9.8 thousand tons за spices (+9.3% year-on-year) worth $27.1 mn (+7.1%).

    Almost half of all the spices imported was pepper. During the first three months of 2020, 4.1 thousand tons (-26.8%) worth $10.3 mn (+6.2%) of pepper was shipped to Russia, the major exporters being Vietnam, China, India and Uzbekistan.

    Export of ginger increased by 3% up to 3.4 thousand tons worth $8.7 mn, up 3.6%. The largest volumes were shipped from China.

    Bay leaf import declined to make 0.5 thousand tons (-16.7%) worth $1.6 mn (-11.1%), the major exporters being Georgia and Turkey.

    During the first quarter of 2020, Russia exported spices from 53 countries, the major exporters were China, Vietnam and India.

    3.5 thousand tons of spices were imported from China, 2.7% less during in the same period in 2019. In monetary terms, spices import from China decreased by 2.1% down to $9.5 mn. Ginger and pepper accounted for almost the entire amount.

    Vietnam shipped to Russia 1.6 thousand tons of spices (+87.5%) worth $4 mn (+60%). Most of the exports were pepper.

    Spices import from India rose by 21.8% up to 1 thousand tons worth $1.6 mn, up 6.7% year-on-year. Much of this was pepper, turmeric, and caraway.
