Arctic Basin Ports’ Throughput in April 2020: Crude Oil Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin ports in May 2020 declined by 9.2%. Cabotage decreased by 21.2%, and export was down 2.2%. Import made 2.1 thousand tons.

    The share of the Arctic basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in May 2020 amounted to 11%.

    43.7% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, LNG accounted for 18.8% and coal and coke for 18.5%.

    The highest growth was in the piece cargo segment (up 5.4-fold), ore (up 3.4-fold) and ferrous metals (up 3.4-fold).

    The commodities that decreased the most were crude oil (-24%), reefer cargo (-22.8%) and non-ferrous metals (-17%).

    Murmansk accounted for 61.6% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Arctic basin sea ports in May. Sabetta handled 29.2%, and Varandey 3.5% of the total.
