Azov and Black Sea Basin Throughput in May: Reefers Cargo Up

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Azov and Black Sea basin ports in May 2020 decreased by 1.7% year-on-year. Import grew by 8.3%, cabotage was up 11.9%. Transit was down 2.6%, and export down 3.2%.

    The share of the Azov and Black Sea basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in May 2020 amounted to 27%.

    More than half of the total was oil and products, with crude oil accounting for 30.1% of the overall throughput, and oil products for 26%. Grain has the third largest share in the aggregate throughput amounting to 12.4%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in the reefer cargo segment (up 4.8-fold), ore (+62.5%) and other bulk (suction) (+61.5%).

    The commodities that decreased the most were Ro-Ro (-81.8%), metal scrap (-48.2%) and timber and logs (-26.3%).

    Novorossiysk accounted for 55.1% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Azov and Black basin sea ports in May. Tuapse handled 13.8%, and port Kavkaz 11% of the total.
