Food Products Import in January-March 2020: White Sugar Import Down

  • According to the RF Federal Customs Service’s statistics, in January-March 2020 fresh and frozen meat import was down 28% to 70.6 thousand tons. Fresh and frozen poultry import increased by 13.5% up to 55.6 thousand tons. Fish import decreased by 2.9% down to 104.5 thousand tons. Canned meat and meat specialties import was up 28.6% making 4.5 thousand tons.

    Milk and condensed cream import was down 24% to 36.8 thousand tons. Butter import increased by 29% amounting to 37.4 thousand tons. Cheese and cottage cheese import declined by 16.4% down to 71 thousand tons.

    Palm oil import was down 8.2% to 231 thousand tons.

    Citrus fruit import was down 8.2% to 590.8 thousand tons. Banana import increased by 2.8% up to 438.7 thousand tons, and apple import declined by 9.8% down to 287.2 thousand tons.

    Raw sugar import decreased by 7.7% down to 1.2 thousand tons, white sugar import dropped by 82% down to 14.2 thousand tons.

    Coffee import in January-March grew by 2.6% up to 56 thousand tons, and tea import by 5.3% up to 37.5 thousand tons.

    In March, the following categories demonstrated a year-on-year decline in import volumes: citrus fruit (down 12.3% to 165.5 thousand tons), apple (down 8% to 105 thousand tons), fish (down 32.7% to 26.6 thousand tons), fresh and frozen meat (down 27% to 26.2 thousand tons), white sugar (down 99% to 0.3 thousand tons) and raw sugar (down 20% to 0.4 thousand tons). Other food products import was up.

    Compared to February 2020, the import of citrus fruit, apple, fish and white sugar declined, the rest of the food product categories under report were up.

    In March, coffee import decreased by 17.2% year-on-year and by 8.5% month-on-month to make 18.3 thousand tons. Tea import was up 11.8% year-on-year and up 25.7% month-on-month to 14.2 thousand tons.
