Shippers Choose Rail in Favour of Deep Sea

  • Logistics operator Rail Cargo Logistics – RUS in cooperation with TransContainer and OOCL Logistics (Russia) Limited have organized the first shipment of newsprint produced by Karelia Pulp from the Nigozero station in Karelia to Chongqing in China.

Previously, the Russian manufacturer exported its products by sea, but due to the negative impact of the pandemic on the transit time and freight rates, the customer for the first time switched to railway for shipments for a distance of over 7,000 km.

According to Rail Cargo Group, the shipment included 62 containers with a total weight of about 1.6 thousand tons. TransContainer provided rolling stock and acted as the train operator on the Russian territory. In China, Rail Cargo Logistics – RUS together with OOCL Logistics (Russia) acted as freight forwarders.

By the end of May it is planned to dispatch 4-5 block trains via the border crossings in Zabaikalsk/Manchuria and Zamyn-Uud/Erlian to Chongqing, Xi’an, Jinan and Shanghai. The border crossings were selected based on the agreed plans of the Chinese and Russian railways, as well as the amount of subsidies.
