According to SeaNews SeaNews Russian Foreign Trade Customs Statistics online service, diamond export from Russia in 2019 amounted to 38.6 mn carats (-12.7% year-on-year) worth $3.8 bn (-24.9%).
In 2019, Russian diamonds were exported to 16 countries. Belgium was the main importer, while Yakutia was the main exporting region.
The export of industrial diamonds decreased in physical terms by 32.3% down to 8.6 mn carats and in monetary terms by 29.8% down to $62.8 mn. Belgium, India and the UAE were the major importers of Russian industrial diamonds supplied mainly from Yakutia.
Non-industrial (jewelry) diamonds export made 30 mn carats (-4.8%) worth $3.7 bn (-24.8%). More than half of the non-industrial diamonds was exported from Russia to Belgium. Also, significant amounts were shipped to India, the UAE, Israel and Hong Kong. Almost 80% of the shipments originated from Yakutia.
Diamond export from Russia to Belgium decreased by 10.7% year-on-year down to 26.9 mn carats. In monetary terms, shipments decreased by 26.7% down to $2.2 bn. The main exporting region was Yakutia, in addition, shipments were made from Kemerovo Oblast and Arkhangelsk Oblast, Moscow and other regions of Russia.
Shipments to the UAE amounted to 5.8 mn carats (+2.7%) worth $451.3 mn (-17.2%). Most of the shipments came from Yakutia. Diamonds were also exported via Moscow, Smolensk Oblast and Primorsky Kray.
Almost all the diamonds exported to India were from Yakutia. In physical terms, diamond export to that country decreased by 18.4% down to 3.9 mn carats, while in monetary terms it was down 12.9% to $593.1 mn.
