Grain Export and Import in January-April 2021: Wheat Export Down

  • According to the RF Federal Customs Service’s statistics, during January-April Russia exported more than 9.5 mn tons of wheat and meslin, down 8.5% year-on-year. In terms of value, grain export grew by 7.5% up to $2.4 bn.

    Wheat export was somewhat limited by the export duty, which was raised from 25 Euro to 50 Euro per ton w.e.f. March 1.

    Wheat import into Russia during January-April 2021 increased by 43.7% up to 57.9 thousand tons. Corn import, on the contrary, declined by 16.6% down to 26.7 thousand tons. Barley import made 4.7 thousand tons was down 51.5% year-on-year.

    In terms of value, wheat import was up 80.2% to $22.7 mn. Corn import was down 10.1% to $97 mn, barley import declined by 31.8% down to $1.5 mn.

    In April 2021 alone, wheat and meslin export from Russia made 799 thousand tons, down 76.4% year-on-year and down 30.3% month-on-month. In terms of value, it dropped by 68.1% year-on-year and by 23.5% month-on-month to make $230.6 mn.

    Wheat import in April was 12.8 thousand tons, up 3.3-fold year-on-year, but down 9.2% month-on-month. Value-wise, wheat import surged 4.1-fold year-on-year and declined by 10.9% month-on-month to $4.9 mn.

    Corn import in April grew by 29.3% year-on-year and decreased by 24.2% month-on-month making 7.5 thousand tons. In terms of value, it was up 2.5-fold year-on-year and down 46.5% month-on-month to make $23.8 mn.

    Barley import made 4.2 thousand tons, up 27.3% year-on-year and up 8.4-fold month-on-month, worth $1 mn, up 66.7% year-on-year and up 2-fold month-on-month.
