Sea Port of St. Petersburg has put into operation two storage yards covering a total of 24 thousand square meters. The port said it is one of the most important infrastructure projects recently implemented.
The terrain was leveled with a multi-layered base and covered with airport slabs. As a result, the permissible load at the new yards quadrupled from 5 to 20 metric tons per square meter. The port can now handle ultra-heavy metal shipments without risking to damage the pavement.
The site is equipped with an increased number of LED floodlights, which is important for safe operations after dark. To minimize the impact of rainwater, new drainage systems were installed, and a monolithic reinforced concrete surface was constructed around the manholes to withstand the weight of any heavy equipment.
The project has transformed intra-port logistics. The new storage yards are located next to deepwater berths. Previously, tractors had to perform complex maneuvers, while now steel is unloaded near the berth. Intra-port transit times have reduced, which has accelerated vessel handling and railcar turnaround.
