FESCO Transport Group has sent the first block train from the railway station of Fanipol in Belarus as part of an intermodal shipment to Shanghai via St. Petersburg, the Group said in a statement.
The train carries 62 40’ units (124 TEU) laden with sawn goods and other timber products made in Belarus. When the train arrives at the port rail station of Avtovo in St. Petersburg, the containers will be loaded on board FESCO’s vessel deployed in FESCO Baltorient Line and transported to Shanghai via the Suez Canal. The estimated transit time by the intermodal route is 50-50 days.
At the initial stage of the project, the new logistics scheme will be used on customer demand. In future, FESCO expects to offer two or three train runs from the station of Fanipol where a container terminal was recently built.
At present, the bulk of Belarus’ export and import traffic is handled via the station of Kolyadichi. FESCO decided to add the station of Fanipol to its route network in order to avoid congestion and delays, the Group explained.
The new intermodal route allows of delivery not only to China but also to India and other SE Asian countries using feeder services from Chinese ports.
