New Nuclear Icebreaker “Sibir” Completes First Mission

  • On February 1, Russia’s brand-new nuclear icebreaker “Sibir” has completed her first mission to escort the m/v “Tersky Bereg” in the port of Dudinka.

    It was the first work task of the vessel after delivery and the first operation conducted by a Project 22220 icebreaker in the shallow Yenisei Bay and river conditions.

    The ice in the Yenisei Bay was up to 1.5 meter thick but the icebreaker was able to guarantee commercially viable speed, according to Rosatom.

    The “Sibir” started escorting the vessels “Turukhan” and “Tersky Bereg” from the Barents Sea to the port of Dudinka on January 28. After reaching the Yenisei Bay, the icebreaker left the “Turukhan” and continued to assist the “Tersky Bereg” to the Yenisei estuary.

    The “Sibir” is soon to get back to fetch the “Turukhan” to escort her to the port of Dudinka. After that. the icebreaker will continue working in the Ob and Yenisei area of the Kara Sea.
