Tea Import to Russia Up in Q1 2020

    According to SeaNews Russian Foreign Trade Customs Statistics online service, in Q1 2020 Russia imported 37.5 thousand tons of tea (+5.3% year-on-year) worth $101.1 mn (-3.4%).

    Black tea accounted for the majority of supplies, its import increased by 6.5% up to 34.4 thousand tons in physical terms. In monetary terms, black tea import decreased by 2.9% down to $91.5 mn. The major exporting countries were India, Sri Lanka and Kenya.

    Import of green tea amounted to 3.1 thousand tons (-6.1%) worth $9.6 mn (-8.6%). Most of green tea came from China.

    During the first quarter of 2020, Russia imported tea from 45 countries, the main suppliers being India, Sri Lanka and Kenya.

    Imports from India increased by 11.9% up to 12.2 thousand tons worth $27.4 mn, up 5.8%. Black tea accounted for almost all of the volume.

    Black tea also prevailed in imports from Sri Lanka. In total, 7.1 thousand tons of tea (-10.1%) worth US$27.3 mn (-17%) was imported from that country.

    Tea import to Russia from Kenya increased to 4.8 thousand tons (+11.6%). In monetary terms, imports, by contrast, declined to make $11.4 mn (-1.7%). Black fermented tea accounted for almost the entire volume.

    3.7 thousand tons of tea (-5.1%) worth $9.6 mn (-16.5%) was shipped to Russia from China. Green tea prevailed.
