Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in July 2021: Grain Down

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in July 2021 declined by 28% year-on-year. Transit was down 18.4%, cabotage down 35%, export decreased by 40.3%, and import by 42.4%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in July 2021 made 0.8%.

    63.8% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, grain accounted for 10.7% and timber and logs for 7.7%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in containerized cargo (+80%), other bulk (grab) (+58.6%), and liquid foodstuffs (+48,9%).

    The commodities that decreased were piece cargo (-68.4%), grain (-57.1%) and timber and logs (-42.5%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 69.2% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in July. Astrakhan handled 28.5%, and Olya 2.3% of the total.
