Caspian Basin Ports’ Throughput in June 2021: Foodstuffs Up

    The article is based on SeaNews PORTSTAT online service (available for SeaNews subsribers).

    According to SeaNews PORTSTAT analytic online service, the total cargo throughput via the Caspian basin ports in June 2021 declined by 16.1% year-on-year. Transit was down 12.9%, export down 22.8%, and cabotage decreased by 46.2%. Import, on the contrary, grew by 6.5%.

    The share of the Caspian basin in the total cargo traffic via all the Russian seaports in June 2021 made 0.8%.

    57.8% of the total cargo traffic was crude oil, liquid foodstuffs accounted for 12.6% and grain for 8.8%.

    It should be noted that the highest growth was in liquid foodstuffs (+59.3%), and other general cargo (+3.7%).

    The commodities that decreased were other bulk (suction) (-69.2%), ferrous metals (-54.9%) and grain (-52.4%).

    Makhachkala accounted for 63.5% of the aggregate cargo throughput via the Russian Caspian basin sea ports in June. Astrakhan handled 33.4%, and Olya 3.2% of the total.
