Russia’s Newest Nuclear Icebreaker Reaches North Pole

    On October 3, the newly built nuclear icebreaker “Arktika” reached the North Pole, United Shipbuilding Corporation reported.

    The icebreakers is currently making a voyage from St. Petersburg where it was built at Baltic Shipyard to Mumansk and undergoing ice trials.

    Characteristics of the icebreaker:

    • LOA – 173.3 m,
    • Beam – 34 m,
    • Draft – 10.5 m / 8.65 m,
    • Speed – 22 knots (in clear water),
    • Power capacity – 60 MWt,
    • Icebreaking capacity – 2.8 m,
    • Life cycle – 40 years.
