February 1, 2018, a ceremony to mark the start of the construction of the new modern cruise terminal in Pionersky, Kaliningrad region, was held.

According to the RF Transport Ministry press service, the ceremony was attended by RF Deputy Transport Minister Viktor Olersky, Kaliningrad Region Governor Anton Alikhanov, Rosmorport CEO Andrey Lavrischev and Bolwerk Board member Sergey Shipitsyn, representative of the contractor.

According to V.Olersky, building a terminal capable of accommodating large-tonnage cruise liners, will be an important instrument in developing this enclave region of Russia.

He said the Ministry of Transport is negotiating with major cruise operators, which show interest in adding Kaliningrad to their cruise rotation.

“In our estimation, the terminal has a potential of serving some 250,000 passengers. But we understand that this figure could be even more”, V.Olersky commented.

He also added that each participant of the cruise project creates five workplaces on shore.

A.Alikhanov said he was sure that the new terminal is to be put into operation as early as in autumn 2019.

The contract for building the terminal worth 7.31 bn rubles was signed in late 2017.
